Cohort 2’s Alex Taylor has recently been to two conferences and writes about them here:
“During October, I travelled to the International Symposium on Visual Computing (ISVC) conference in Lake Tahoe, Nevada. I made some great contacts and enjoyed excellent keynote talks from established industry members. My paper, “Discrete Anomalous Regions (DAR) – Going Beyond Heatmaps and Predicting Actionable Discrete Regions”, introduces a method for anomaly detection that produces discrete predictions. I argue that this approach is more actionable and beneficial for real industry use cases.
Earlier this week, I attended the British Machine Vision Conference (BMVC) in Glasgow. I published the following paper: “Advancing Anomaly Detection: The IDW dataset and MC algorithm”. This presents a new dataset that is more challenging and varied than existing datasets, which is intended to better represent real world problems. It also presents a new algorithm, MultiCore, which builds on existing algorithms through an ensemble strategy and synthetic anomalies. This achieves state-of-the-art on the introduced dataset and the most common existing dataset.
Throughout both these events, I was fortunate to meet many researchers also working in my domain (anomaly detection). We had some great discussions about challenges and the future direction of the field. I appreciated the interest many attendees showed in my work, and I’m looking forward to implementing some of the ideas sparked during these discussions.
As I enter the writing phase of my PhD, I’m very grateful for the opportunity to have attended these events.”
