ART-AI students graduate!

Congratulations to our recent ART-AI graduates.

L-R Joe Goodier, Damien Ziubroniewicz, Jack R. Saunders, Andy Evans, Philip Lorimer (from EPSRC Centre for Digital Entertainment) & Jack E. Saunders.

We are delighted to celebrate the achievements of five exceptional researchers from the ART‑AI Centre for Doctoral Training: Joe Goodier, Jack E. Saunders, Andy Evans, Damien Ziubroniewicz, and Jack R. Saunders. Their work spans the diverse, interdisciplinary landscape of Accountable, Responsible and Transparent AI, and each now joins our growing community of ART‑AI alumni dedicated to shaping AI for the public good.

Joe Goodier

Research Area: Generative Out‑of‑Distribution Detection for Medical Diagnostics

Joseph Goodier’s research focuses on developing generative, explainable methods for detecting out‑of‑distribution medical images — a crucial capability for safe and trustworthy AI‑assisted diagnostics. By using generative models as Bayesian priors, his work explores how AI can identify healthy versus abnormal samples and reveal which image features drive those distinctions.

Jack E. Saunders

Research Area: Reactive collision avoidance for UAV delivery

Jack E. Saunders’ PhD explored how deep reinforcement learning can enable highly reactive manoeuvres in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), enabling safer autonomous delivery systems. His work addresses the critical safety challenges posed by UAVs in dynamic environments and seeks to build trust in emerging delivery technologies. Jack’s research blends robotics, machine learning, and real‑world safety concerns.

Andy Evans

Research Area: AI technologies and their impact on the workforce

Andy Evans’ research investigates how AI will shape future workplaces, focusing on the evolving skills, competencies, and organisational models required in AI‑enabled industries. His work highlights the social and economic implications of automation, emphasising the responsibility of organisations and policymakers in protecting workers and ensuring equitable transitions.

Damien Ziubroniewicz

Research Area: Fair Machine Learning

Damien’s PhD focused on developing fairness‑adjusted machine learning algorithms designed to reduce bias, discrimination, and unfairness while maintaining predictive performance.

Jack R. Saunders

Research Area: Style in speech‑driven facial animation

Jack R. Saunders’ research uses state‑of‑the‑art deep learning and GAN‑based methods to capture and reconstruct the subtle idiosyncrasies of individual human faces for CGI and digital human applications. His work also explores the ethical dimensions of realistically reconstructed faces, including deepfake risk and responsible digital‑human design.

Congratulations once again to Joe Goodier, Jack E. Saunders, Andy Evans, Damien Ziubroniewicz, and Jack R. Saunders. We look forward to seeing the impact you make next. They join our growing ART-AI Alumni: Mafalda Ribeiro, Elena Safrygina, Tory Frame, Elsa Zhong.
