Thao Do from Cohort 2 recently facilitated a workshop hosted by the Council of Europe’s Conference on Empowering Change. Thao writes:
“In June 2025, I had the pleasure of presenting my research and facilitating a workshop on ‘Ethical Use of AI in Combating Trafficking in Human Beings’ hosted by Council of Europe‘s Conference on Empowering Change: Technology and Artificial Intelligence in the Fight Against Human Trafficking.
The workshop convened participants from 32 European member states, including policymakers, civil society actors, tech experts, and frontline practitioners. Together, we explored real-world case studies, ranging from AI-powered chatbots and facial recognition to predictive risk mapping, and examined their ethical, legal, and human rights implications.
Designed to be interactive and participatory, the session encouraged cross-sectoral dialogue and critical reflection. Participants worked collaboratively to identify hidden risks, pose challenging questions, and develop practical safeguards grounded in accountability, transparency, and survivor inclusion.
I’m grateful for the openness, insight, and collaborative spirit that everyone brought to the session. Thank you to the Council of Europe and Malta’s Human Rights Directorate for the kind invitation and for creating a space to advance this vital conversation on building AI systems that uphold justice, human dignity, and the rights of those most affected.”
