Eoin Cremen from Cohort 4 recently returned from a research trip to America. He writes about his experience:
“I recently had a great experience on a research trip in the United States. Two researchers who lead the Decision Process Lab, David Illingworth and Rick Thomas, invited me to visit their centres. I spent 4 days in Long Beach with David Illingworth and his students at California State University. Then went on to Atlanta, Georgia where I spent 5 days with Rick Thomas at Georgia Institute of Technology. In both centres I presented my PhD work to their students, and we had in-depth discussions on potential future collaborations. My experiments have drawn from an experimental paradigm that was the brainchild of the team at the Decision Process Lab. It was a fantastic opportunity to dive into the research space in such detail with the originators. The feedback was very positive and it is an example of how impactful open science practices can be.
I finished the trip in Denver, where I presented at two overlapping conferences – the annual meetings of Psychonomics and the Society for Judgement and Decision-Making. I had some great engagement resulting from the presentation and came away with new leads for potential post-PhD opportunities.
It was reassuring to find that visiting the US in these current times was still a very positive experience. I was still able to leave with an optimism for the future and would encourage other students to continue taking these opportunities if they arise. I would also like to take this chance to express my gratitude to the ART-AI staff who made this visit possible.”
