Cohort 3’s Jack McKinlay recently visited Umeå University in Sweden and writes about his trip here:
“From November 10th to November 24th I had the pleasure to be invited by the Responsible Artificial Intelligence research group at Umeå University in Sweden to spend two weeks collaborating with them to further my research. Working with fellow doctoral researcher Mattias Brännström, we took advantage of recent advances in large language models to develop a novel and robust approach to automated modelling of values underpinning policy, based on my PhD in value alignment between humans and AI.
Visiting one of Bath’s partner universities was a fantastic opportunity to accelerate my work and expose it to some fascinating new perspectives. The computer science department at Umeå hosts some brilliant researchers offering truly diverse perspectives on the topic of AI and its integration with society. The feedback on our work we received in a presentation hosting researchers from both Bath and Umeå was engaged, thought-provoking, and holistic, and left us feeling very encouraged about the future of the research!
Experiencing another university’s research environment (and climate!) was a very rewarding opportunity, and I would heartily encourage anyone interested in doing something similar to pursue any leads. Between the development of my research, the new colleagues and friends in my network, and the scenery and events I was able to experience (including a very entertaining live music show), my two weeks at Umeå were definitely both a personal and professional highlight in my PhD.”
