Oscar Bryan has recently come back from a work placement at NATO’s Centre for Marine Research and Experimentation (CMRE) and writes about his trip:
In May, I had the privilege of undertaking a work placement at NATO’s Centre for Marine Research and Experimentation (CMRE) in Italy. With a rich history dating back to the 1950s, NATO CMRE has been at the forefront of pioneering research in the marine domain. During my placement, I was given the opportunity to work with researchers and contribute to projects focused on the use of AI.
Through the placement I was able to deepen my understanding of methods that I can go on to apply to my PhD research back at Bath. My research involves using machine learning to detect and classify unexploded ordnance on the sea floor. This is a job best suited to robots that can work in dangerous and isolated environments. There is very limited communication possible with a robot operating near the sea floor, therefore safe and reliable autonomy is important to increasing the robot’s capabilities.
Living in Italy was an enjoyable experience, with the chance to try local food, swim in the Mediterranean, go hiking, and explore nearby tourist attractions. The serene surroundings and warm atmosphere contributed to making my stay at NATO CMRE and in Italy memorable and captivating. One of the most rewarding aspects of my placement was the initiation of a collaborative project that will continue even after my time at CMRE.
