This event will take place in person at the University of Bath (Room 1W 2.03) on Friday 21st March 12.15pm-13.05pm. Shona McIntosh, Senior Lecturer, Department of Education, University of Bath and Catriona Gray, ART-AI student (cohort 1) will be leading this roundtable discussion. More details below:

The provocative question in the title was raised by Nemequene Tundama, a doctoral student at SOAS, in his 2016 talk at the University of Sussex event on decolonising the curriculum in UK universities (watch his talk, from 1:01, via https://youtu.be/hXJS8d2T1IE ). Tundama’s premise is that you cannot decolonise what has never been colonised; British universities are in fact the colonisers. We are beginning this round table discussion from the same premise but focusing on university knowledge more broadly. University knowledge is that which is generated through scientific research, and which is so valued that it feeds into ongoing lines of research enquiry as well as into university teaching and, thus, into dominant social narratives. If we accept this argument, it follows that researchers and teachers in universities have considerable power to influence ideas about what knowledge matters most.

In the session we will consider the creation of super knowledge by super knowers (Santos, 2018) in the context of AI. We will critically question the kinds of knowledge that are available and promulgated through, and about, AI, the types of problems which are identified as having AI mitigate them and which knowledges – and knowers – AI is relegating to the sidelines. Together, our discussion will explore the potential AI has for re/producing historic inequalities in current knowledge systems in and outside universities.

If you are unable to make it in person, you can join online. If you would like to join, please e-mail [email protected].
