We are pleased to have Nina Khairova, a Professor of Computational Linguistics at Umeå University’s Computer Science Department, join us for this ART-AI Spotlight on Equality, Diversity and Inclusivity Seminar entitled ‘Human-AI Solutions for Misinformation Detection and Trustworthiness Evaluation in the Russian-Ukraine War Context’. This will be taking place online on the 6th February 2024, 12.15pm-13.15pm (GMT).

Abstract

The talk offers a comprehensive exploration of misinformation, addressing strategies, challenges, and potential human-AI solutions within the context of the Russian-Ukraine conflict. It delves into the widespread dissemination of false information online and its risks in today’s digital societies. Examining both technical and psychological aspects, it explores misinformation’s impact across various societal domains. The discussion includes categorizing types of misinformation and evaluating detection methods, highlighting their strengths and limitations. Furthermore, it explores the complexities of detecting misinformation amid the Russia-Ukraine conflict and considers various approaches involving human-AI collaboration to address misinformation concerning news reporting on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Bio

Nina Khairova, a Professor of Computational Linguistics at Umeå University’s Computer Science Department, hails from Ukraine. Her research interests span corpus linguistics, natural language processing, machine learning, and responsible artificial intelligence. Presently, she is actively engaged in the HumaneAI net Horizon Europe project, specifically involved in two microprojects dedicated to misinformation detection and assessing the trustworthiness of public information. These microprojects are titled ‘A Human-AI Approach to Misinformation Detection in the Context of News Reporting on Russia’s invasion of Ukraine‘ and ‘Building TRUST in social media: assessing the Trustworthiness of public Information on Ukrainian Migration to Europe.’ Nina has authored three books, published over 30 peer-reviewed articles, and received over 350 citations.
