This event is hosted by Women in AI (https://www.womeninai.co/) and the Centre for Artificial Intelligence at UCL (https://www.ucl.ac.uk/ai-centre/ucl-centre-artificial-intelligence). ART-AI is one of the CDTs that will host a breakout Q&A session with Marina De Vos and some of our ART-AI students.
This event is aimed at Women who are considering a research career in AI to talk, listen and inspire; our event will involve a keynote talk, followed by a panel session for questions and discussions and then smaller breakout sessions from the various UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training in AI from around the UK.
Welcome and Introduction to Doctoral Studies: David Barber, Director for the UCL Centre for Artificial Intelligence.
Keynote Speakers:
Feryal Behbahani, Research Scientist at DeepMind
Feryal is a Research Scientist at DeepMind in the Machine Learning team led by Nando de Freitas where her research focuses on reinforcement learning. Previously, she was a Lead Research Scientist at Latent Logic (now part of Waymo), founded by Shimon Whiteson in Oxford working on using reinforcement learning, multi-agents and imitation learning to learn human-like behaviour from videos with applications for robotics, autonomous driving and games.
She received her MSc in Artificial Intelligence from Imperial College London followed by a PhD focused on algorithms employed by the human brain for object representation, control and inference. She is on the WiML board of directors and passionate about increasing diversity in the field.
Yasemin Bekiroglu, Research Fellow at UCL and Assistant Professor at Chalmers University
Yasemin is a Senior Researcher in the Statistical Machine Learning group at UCL and an Assistant Professor in the Automatic Control group at Chalmers University of Technology. She completed her Ph.D. at the Royal Institute of Technology (KTH) in 2012. She worked as a post-doctoral researcher at University of Birmingham, as a research scientist at ABB, Corporate Research, Sweden, and as a roboticist at Vicarious, CA. Her research is focused on data-efficient learning from multisensory data for robotics applications. She received the Best Paper Award at IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation for Humanitarian Applications (RAHA) in 2016 and the Best Manipulation Paper Award at IEEE International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA) in 2013, and was IEEE/RSJ International Conference on Intelligent Robots and Systems (IROS) CoTeSys Cognitive Robotics Best Paper Award Finalist in 2013.
Panellists:
Rula Awad (AI product Manager for fake news company and WAI Ambassador in the UK)
Feryal Behbahani (Research Scientist at DeepMind)
Marzieh Saedi (Research Scientist at Facebook)
Yasemin Bekiroglu (Research Fellow at UCL and Assistant Professor at Chalmers University)
Federica Sarro (Professor of Software Engineering at UCL)
Chaired by Marc Deisenroth, co-Director for the UCL Centre for Artificial Intelligence.
