ART-AI student Jack R Saunders led the organisation of a Student Conference which happened on the 16th and 17th September 2021. This was an in person event on campus at the University of Bath.
Day 1 had a talk delivered by Ali Eslami from ART-AI partner DeepMind and a tutorial on Explainable AI delivered by Vaishak Belle from the Alan Turing Institute.
Day 2 had Graham King and Steve Collins from DesAcc, an ART-AI partner, delivering a highly interactive session on ‘Healthcare in AI.’ After a mind focusing Tai Chi session delivered by ART-AI staff Marina and Julian, the students then heard from Ben Miles from Spin Up Science about entrepreneurship.
At the end of Day 2, a 24 hour Hackathon was organised which started at 5pm on the 17th September and finished at 5pm on Saturday 18th September. The students spent 24 hours working on the problem of “how to program a self-driving car that drives around a track using just the camera with deep learning and AI”.
The lead organiser Jack R Saunders commented on the experience, “I think the event went very well. Our guest speakers were excellent, the hackathon was good fun and it was great to see everyone all together!”
Overall, the event was a great success and we are looking forward to the next student led event.
